(To familiarise yourself with Derryl’s achievements before this video please see the Pentatonic Passages review of last week).

From the outset you could almost be forgiven for thinking this is a simple “licks” video of the type popularised in the early days of VHS recorders and Video Instruction…almost. While there are indeed licks/lines/phrases galore on this DVD as usual with Derryl there’s a very thorough theoretical background included for all the examples which means a large amount of .pdf and PowerTab files also lurking there for your viewing pleasure (and no doubt subsequent finger-knotting torture…I mean…practice).

I do mean that in a good way but as with any video of this standard I should include a word of warning. Derryl (as noted previously) has an awesome technique and I would urge anyone aspiring to reach his level to progress with care. There are some large stretches and absolutely frightening lines here so take your time whilst learning and don’t overdo the physical exertions.

Mentally of course, feel free to wade into the plethora of material which includes:

Heptatonics (actually triads and triad inversions), String Skipping Arpeggios (and a nice acknowledgement of Derek Taylor’s influence), examinations of odd note groupings/polyrhythms, Harmonic Minor Hybrids (think Harmonic Minor Pentatonic – or a scale/arpeggio cross) a further examination of Pentatonics and also some Melodic Minor Hybrid ideas – masses and masses of notes thrown at you without mercy but presented in such a way that the information is broken down into more easily digestible fragments.

Of course, it goes without saying that each lick is perfectly explained and played at the usual speeds of slow and face-meltingly quick and all of this attention to detail raises Cool Legato Phrases into the “highly recommended” category for any player seeking inspiration.
